The Honest Woodcutter

honest_woodcutter

Once upon a time, in a quiet little village surrounded by tall green trees, lived a humble woodcutter named Jono. Every morning, Jono walked into the forest with his old axe, whistling softly as the birds sang above him. He never took more wood than he needed, and he always thanked the trees for their shade and strength.

One sunny day, while cutting a tree near the river, Jono’s axe slipped from his hands and fell into the deep water.
“Oh no!” he cried, kneeling by the riverbank. “That was my only axe. How will I work now?”

Just then, the water began to sparkle. From the middle of the river rose a gentle spirit dressed in light made of silver mist.
“Why are you sad, kind woodcutter?” the spirit asked softly.

Jono bowed respectfully. “Dear spirit, I dropped my axe into the river, and I cannot find it.”

The spirit smiled. “Do not worry. I will help you.”
She disappeared beneath the surface and returned holding a golden axe that shone brighter than the sun.
“Is this your axe?” she asked.

Jono shook his head. “No, that’s not mine. My axe was old and made of iron.”

The spirit smiled again and went underwater. When she came back, she held a silver axe – smooth and beautiful.
“Perhaps this one is yours?”

Jono looked at it and sighed gently. “No, that’s not mine either. Mine is plain and rusty.”

The spirit went down once more, and this time she returned with a simple iron axe, its handle worn but sturdy.
Jono’s eyes lit up. “Yes! That’s my axe! Thank you so much!”

The spirit looked deeply at him, her eyes shining with kindness.
“You are an honest man, Jono. Because you told the truth, I will give you all three axes – the golden, the silver, and your own.”

Jono was surprised. “But I don’t need the others,” he said softly. “I only need my own axe to work.”

The spirit smiled even wider. “Your heart is pure, and that is worth more than gold. Keep them, and remember – honesty will always bring light to your life.”

From that day on, Jono became known as The Honest Woodcutter. People from far and wide came to hear his story. He never used the golden or silver axe, but he kept them safely as a reminder that truth is more precious than any treasure.

And every evening, as the sun set behind the forest, Jono would whisper to the wind,
“Honesty is the root of every good thing.”

And the forest, in its soft rustling voice, would seem to whisper back,
“Yes, it is.”

💛 Moral of the Story:
Honesty shines brighter than gold and brings peace to the heart.
